Wrigleyville

The "village" of Wrigleyville has established its own identity within the surrounding boundaries of the historic Lakeview neighborhood. Wrigleyville has its own booming economy, its own unique cuisine (the legendary Chicago Hot Dog) and its own sacred cathedral, Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. Perhaps you will visit on a game day when Waveland and Sheffield Avenues are alive with thousands of fans and passersby, many of whom are local residents under the age of thirty-five.It is this generation of young urbanites that has revitalized the Lakeview/Wrigleyville area.

But there is more to Wrigleyville than just the ballpark and baseball. Just behind Wrigley's leftfield wall is the Chicago Fire Department's Engine Company 78 and its historic century old firehouse. Your guide will take you there and show you the only fire truck garage with a baseball motif interior. The pictures on the wall will tell the story of the longstanding relationship between the firefighters and the Cubs players.

Two blocks north of the centerfield wall is Alta Vista Terrace, "the street of forty doors". Its London-like rowhouses are duplicated on the diagonally opposite side of the street, a true architectural oddity.

Before leaving, you might want to stop for a "Chicago brew" at the Cubby Bear or Murphy's Bleachers. It would be a good way to remember an excursion that oddly enough combined history, architecture and baseball.

SPECIAL NOTE: Interior tours of Wrigley Field are run solely by the Chicago Cubs on non-game day Saturdays between May 15th and September 1st. The Cubs require a $10 fee per person. Upon request, interior tours can be coordinated with your neighborhood walk.
